Presented in partnership with the Fruitmarket, Edinburgh, Appau Jnr Boakye-Yiadom's sound-based performance During: Compliment follows on from his piece Before: Compliment, that we commissioned for our Live Art Commissions on 30 March 2022.

7 May 2022, anytime between 3–7pm.

For Live Art Commissions, Appau Jnr Boayke-Yiadom invited a string trio from Apartment House to play an improvised musical arrangement. The musicians were hidden from view and responded to the movement of the audience as they entered the room.

In this new iteration Boakye-Yiadom builds upon the structures laid out in the first performance. A new set of Scotland-based musicians (double bass, piano, drums, and guitar), will play an improvised arrangement in response to the original music recording, layering the piece.

This presentation will be accompanied by a video projection from the original performance giving the audience a chance to see this build-up of relationships and how the musicians improvise within the original structure.

On the day preceding the performance, Boakye-Yiadom will be in conversation with Ned McConnell, to discuss his practice and the development of Before: Compliment and During: Compliment, with music, sound and visual clips drawn from his research and previous performances.

The Fruitmarket, Edinburgh

The Fruitmarket Warehouse is a new space for art in Edinburgh that lends itself to performance. Previously, the Fruitmarket looked for opportunities to show live art, performance and music in the galleries, squeezing in projects between installations and deinstallations, or within exhibitions.
